Samsung exiting the hard drive business

The Korean electronics giant Samsung is looking to sell of its loss making Hard drive division. Samsung hopes to earn as much as $1.5 billion from the sale. It intends to invest the funds in other more profitable areas of its business.
Samsung is the second hard disk drive manufacturer to announce a sell off in recent weeks. Earlier Hitachi announced that it was selling off its HDD business to Western Digital. Seagate is expected to take over Samsung’s HDD unit.
Cut throat competition is one reason for these changes. Manufactures also appear to have been spooked by the rise of Solid State Drives or SSDs that deliver faster speeds using flash memory instead of rotating platters.
These recent changes in the HDD industry mean that only 3 major manufacturers remain – Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba.

Samsung: We never knew you!

Apart from a few 2.5″ models Samsung HDDs never took off in Pakistan. But internationally Samsung F3 brand hard disk drives are often recommended by computer enthusiasts for their good performance and value for money. Sadly for us Pakistani consumers we never got to use Samsung hard drives.
